Technology lawyer Kevin Toll focuses his practice almost exclusively on internet-related business law, including contracts, licensing and transactions, regulatory compliance, website policies, and privacy and cybersecurity issues. While business law has been around for centuries, the internet, and laws relating to it, are relatively new and constantly changing to catch up to the technology. Kevin knows that this is an area of the law that is increasingly important to many people, but understood by relatively few.
Kevin comes from a family of lawyers, and has had a lifelong interest in computers and technology, so his practice is a natural fit for him. Early in his career, he spent several years as a litigator dealing with contract breaches and other disputes; he has seen the ways in which a lack of clarity in legal drafting can lead to needless conflict. Kevin makes it a priority to draft legal documents in clear, understandable language to avoid confusion. As he observes, “If a lawyer brags that their contract is ‘litigation-tested,’ that suggests that it wasn’t as well-drafted as it should have been.” The best agreements never have to be litigated.
Kevin uses his nearly two decades of legal experience to protect his clients’ rights and businesses and keep them out of court. His clients typically excel at the various business ventures they engage in, but they may not be aware of all the regulations and laws that apply to their online activity. As a technology lawyer, Kevin educates them and ensures that their activity complies with legal requirements, so that they can focus on the work they do best. He notes, “Clients appreciate being told the truth, even when the answer they get isn’t what they wanted to hear.”
When not working, Kevin enjoys reading, exercising, and spending time with his wife and young children (which often means chauffeuring the kids back and forth to their various activities). Kevin is also a passionate Detroit Lions fan.
